What is Geography all about:
Geography is all about understanding about different places and different people. You will learn about everything from arctic tundra to tropical rainforests and from tiny villages to huge mega-cities.
How we learn in Geography:
We aim to provide you with worthwhile opportunities to develop your knowledge, skills and understanding of the subject. To accomplish this we use a wide variety of teaching and learning methods including teacher and pupil input, group tasks, fieldwork, visits, multimedia presentations.
You are encouraged to develop your own ideas and conduct research within the themes.
There are six themes in each year so the topic never stops moving forward.

Welcome to the Geography Department
Our aims are to represent Geography as a subject with relevance to the lives of our students. We aim to enable all students to reach their potential. We want the Geographers of the Albany School to be engaged with their learning and enthusiastic about Geography. In order to achieve this we aim to offer a varied programme of learning activities including opportunities to learn ‘in the field’. Learning outside and inside the classroom are equally important. Recently we have experienced successful fieldtrips to The Olympic Park, Westfield Stratford City, Walton on the Naze and the Bay of Naples. We also like to get out and about in the local area to learn about our own area. Inside the classroom we aim to cater for all learning styles and all levels of ability. We also value how independent learning and decision making skills help our young Geographers to understand their responsibilities as global citizens.

|Where am I?||Demonstrate an understanding of map skills and explain the location of the school.||What is the UK like?||Identify the main features of the UK including cities, counties, national parks, rivers and mountains|
|Journey to School||Use compass points, scale and grid references to create their own journey to school on a map||Who lives in the UK?||Investigate the different groups of people living within the UK and understand about tolerance and national identity.|
|What is Albany Road Like?||Investigate through the enquiry a local hypothesis. Work is presented accurately using graphs, maps, diagrams and field sketches.||What is the UK weather like?||Students learn about the three types of rainfall, anticyclones and depressions in the context of the UK setting.|

|Drainage Basins||Understand and explain river and landform processes. Complete a TV news flood report based on a recent flood event.||Managing resources||Know the advantages of renewable energy and complete a report on a major industrial accident (e.g. BP spill Gulf of Mexico)|
|Ecosystems||Explain relationships between plants, animals, earth and the atmosphere. Conservation case studies of UK woodland, Amazon rainforest and the Sahel.||Jobs and the workplace||Students learn about employment structures, compare working conditions in the UK with those found in other places such as Bangladesh.|

Year 9 Geography
|People Work and Development||Who are you?|
|Population||Be able to identify and explain population factors. Investigate migration as a local issue, and as a global one including the Syrian refugee crisis and the Mexico – USA border issue.||Who are you?||Students learn about the complex nature of place, space and identity. Understand a wide variety of viewpoints and perspectives about the world and local, national and global scales.|
|Brazil||Pupils learn about the host nation of the World Cup and the Olympics. Themes to include tourism, deforestation and urbanisation. Taught through fantasy plane crash scenario-based learning experiences.||Europe||Be able to explain how the European Union influences the social, environmental and economic conditions in the UK and abroad.|
|Development||Students learn about contrasting levels of development between wealthy and poor nations.||Map Work||Students cover some of the more advanced map skills including 6 figure G.R.’s, cross-sections, GIS and knowing where places are.|

The course is assessed through two examinations (75%) and one Controlled Assessment (25%)
